I had the most sincere pleasure of joining 149 other fashion and beauty bloggers at the inaugural Lucky Magazine Fashion & Beauty Blog Conference today here in NYC.  Not only did we get to hear the inspirational and aspirational stories of fashion icons Tory Burch and J.Crew President and Executive Creative Director, Jenna Lyons, but we got to have the long-awaited and much-needed discussion about the business of blogging, particularly as it relates to beauty and fashion.

Thanks to Lucky Editor-in-Chief Brandon Holley and her incredible team, we had an info-packed day with panels ranging from how to partner with big brands (Lancôme, Coach and Bergdorf Goodman kicked off the day with an insightful discussion – they’re much more receptive than you might think!) to building a strong seed audience, a fantastic panel that included VP of Communications for Oscar de la Renta, Erika Bearman and Mary Tomer, Founder of the wildly popular homage to our first lady, Mrs.-O.org.  Each speaker had practical, yet invaluable advice, but there were two things that most resonated with me. First, point of view is everything when building a great blog.  Second, the fashion, beauty and publishing industries have officially recognized bloggers as the new generation of editors/tastemakers/everyman authorities.  I like it.

More importantly, thank you to Brandon for having the vision to fully and genuinely embrace the blog community and bring us into the conversation.  She is a publishing pioneer for many reasons, and this conference is the most recent example of her innovation. (And thank you to all the brands that helped compose the amazing gift bags we received – I’m sure you should stay tuned for product reviews…once I actually get through everything!)

On a personal note, I was surprisingly moved and inspired by Joan Rivers, who – through various vulgar epithets – showed me why she is considered an icon.  She is fearless!  And a feminist.  And she reminded me to “Take a chance. The only thing you regret in life are the things you don’t do.”

Powerful stuff.
