L’Oreal Acquires Essie

May 11, 2010

Cosmetics giant (and my alma mater) L’Oreal announced recently its plans to continue its efforts in beauty world domination by acquiring Essie, the nail care company that has almost single-handedly made nail color the favorite beauty accessory for women all over the world.

Essie Weingarten founded the eponymous company nearly 30 years ago in Astoria, Queens.  Today, Essie is in more than 250,000 salons and 100 countries.  The L’Oreal acquisition allows Essie to experiment with the advances in R&D, for which L’Oreal is known, and of course, to increase distribution.  In turn, Essie gives the beauty house an opportunity to recover lost share in the nail segment (remember when women used to match their nail polish and lipstick?) and expand its professional products portfolio.

I just hope Essie continues to look and feel fun and fresh!
