Better Late Than Never: Bloomingdale’s to Open Outlet Stores

January 21, 2010

Finally! In response to consumers’ focus on value, Macy’s recently announced that it will open four Bloomingdale’s outlet stores this year with more slated for 2011. I’m not sure why it took so long given that Off Fifth, Last Call and Nordstrom Rack (including one coming to Union Square in NYC!) are proven growth strategies for fine department stores and have been for a number of years. How else will they compete with the deadly combination of Scoop, Intermix and Gilt Groupe, especially given our current economic reality?

According to Crain’s, “the first Bloomingdale’s outlets, which will each take up about 25,000 square feet, will be housed in the Bergen Town Center of Paramus, NJ, Miami’s Dolphin Mall, Potomac Mills in Woodbridge, VA and Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, FL.”

Bloomingdale’s Outlet stores will offer apparel and accessories for men, women and children, including a combination of clearance items from Bloomingdale’s regular stores and items intended to be sold only at the outlet stores. Let’s hope the outlet items are as good as Off the Rack.
